a) Description of the organisation[edit]
Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial (INEGI) founded in 1986, is an interface Institution between University of Porto and Industry, oriented to the activities of Research and Development, Innovation and Technology Transfer. A strong link to the Faculty of Engineering is maintained, being its Department of Mechanical Engineering one of the Institute’s main knowledge sources with its large range of scientific and technologic competences. Being a non-profit private association and recognized as being of public utility, INEGI is currently considered an active agent playing a significant role in the development of the Portuguese industry, and in the transformation of its competitive model. Its Mission is materialized through the development of R&D and Innovation projects. INEGI provides a specific service in Energy and Environmental Management The Institute carries out diagnosis and energy audits in buildings and industrial facilities. The main emphasis goes to the optimisation and rationalisation of consumption (namely through energy rationalisation plans) and energy conversion (feasibility studies for cogeneration systems). For developing these activities INEGI has several laboratory facilities and specific equipment for performing energy audits. NEGI’s tradition on renewable energies has been remarkable, particularly through wind energy. The Institute operates about 200 meteorological networks spread all over Portugal and has been responsible for carrying out feasibility studies on wind potential for producing electricity on most Portuguese wind parks. Recently, INEGI has directed its activity toward other areas, such as converting used vegetable oils into hydrogen and biodiesel. For that, INEGI has invested in laboratory facilities and applied for R&D projects in these fields. In the Industrial Energy and Thermal fields, INEGI is focused on R&D projects in consultancy and specialised training activities including also diagnosis and energy audits in buildings and industrial facilities. INEGI has, for over a decade, been developing Environment related activities. Its competencies and services include, among many others, the characterisation of emissions and the development of solutions to minimise them. INEGI has been involved in several projects funded by the European Union (IEE, INTERREG IVB, 6th Framework Programme ).
